PERFECT CONDITIONS IN TOWNSVILLE FOR ROUND THREE OF SUPERBOATS
Despite Townsville putting on perfect conditions for round three
of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships, local teams 'Mazlin
Electrical Services' and 'It's About Time' didn't have much luck in both races.
The Offshore Superboat round was part of the 'Townsville 400 festival', which
provided the perfect family atmosphere, with free entertainment and live music.
The month long event also includes a round of the V8 Supercar Championship to
be held this weekend.
"It was fantastic to be back in Townsville and the large crowds along the
Strand proved just how popular this event is for locals and competitors,"
Offshore Superboat President Adam Gilbert said.
"We get great support from local Council as well as the Breakwater Marina,
and we will definitely be back here next year."
In some of the closest racing this season, Steve Jellick and Travis Thompson
from Team 3 in Supercat 1000 Class went from pole position in race one to sixth
place on lap three after missing a turn buoy.
However, with 15 minutes of racing to complete, Team 3 managed to haul in their
competitors to take the race win.
"We simply miss judged the turn at the bottom end of the course. So we
rang the boat's neck to get back the lead. The boat's going really well and we
can't wait for the next round in Mooloolaba," Team 3 Pilot, Travis
Thompson said.
Team 3 then continued their impressive form in the second race, where they
again claimed line honours.
"It was a great result for Team 3 and it really sets up an interesting
final three rounds of the season as only a few points separate Team 3 from
Maritimo Mainlube Express, Global Racing and The Good Guys," President
Gilbert said.
It was a tough day for local team Mazlin Electrical Services, with Carl Mazlin
and Scott Kittle unable to give their home fans anything to cheer about,
finishing fifth in both races.
However, the team remains optimistic their Supercat boat will get better and
will be competitive for the rest of the season.
In Supercat 600 class, Blade kept their momentum going from the last round in
Mackay, with Cameron Davis and Peter Lewis claiming line honours in the first
race.
In the second race, Graham Fraser and Scott Gehrman from BBC Digital were
victorious ahead of Blade. Kwozzy 2 and SUV Dodge Ram completed the round,
however both had mechanical issues.
In Supercat 400 class, the battle continued between Phantom and 88 Offshore
racing, with the lead changing at least ten times during the first race.
The Phantom team of Mick Walker and Gary Smith again proved too strong and won
both races in Townsville.
"Phantom are certainly the inform team of the competition and remain
undefeated this year. They are going to be very hard to beat especially with
only three rounds to go," President Gilbert said.
The Offshore Superboat Championships now head to the coastal Queensland town of
Mooloolaba for the fourth round of the season, on the weekend of the 11th and
12th of August,
