Mustang win Williamstown
The last round of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships didn’t disappoint as Port Phillip Bay delivered the roughest conditions of the 2011 Series.
Spectacular race conditions provided spectators with a thrilling 1 hour race as the wind exceeded 20 knots on the Bay.
Mustang displayed some fantastic racing after a disappointing pole shoot out round. The Mustang mechanics worked overtime on Saturday night to get the boat ready and back out on the water ready for Sunday’s race. It paid off as they crossed the line in first place and well ahead of team rival Maritimo who took 2nd for the day.
Mainlube Express performed well in the conditions and came in 3rd for the Class One category.
The Supercat 1000 round was anyone’s race, but it was Global Racing who had pole position and ultimately dominated the race.
Team 3 were a little bit off the pace in the final round, but on the back of an amazing win in Geelong, they weren’t to be discounted.
The Good Guys from Mackay were tucked up behind Global and it looked to be a close race, but after The Good Guys broke a fuel line mid way through the race, it became a 2 horse contest between the Gilbert brothers. Global were too good as the boat looked fantastic in the water and they crossed the line 1 minute ahead of Team 3.
Victorian boat Saracen put on a great performance in their home town and crossed the line a whopping 2 laps ahead of BBC Digital.
The Supercat 600HP class has been a hotly contested class between these 2 boats and with BBC Digital narrowly taking the Geelong round, Saracen pulled out an amazing race for the last round of the year.
With only 1 boat braving the rough conditions in the Supercat 400HP class, It’s About Time from Mackay, unfortunately ended their day with a DNF.
They were struggling with engine issues throughout the week and it didn’t hold up in the race, ending their day early.
Taking in to consideration today’s results, the 2011 Aus 1 Champions are Maritimo. Their consistency throughout the Series gave them the win by 1300 point ahead of Supercat 1000 boat, The Good Guys who came in 2nd. Third place in the Aus 1 Championship race was 2010 Aus 1 Champion Mustang.
In the individual Classes, Maritimo took the Class One title, proving to be the most consistent Class One boat in 2011. It was the Mackay Frier brothers, Chris and Brendan, who won the Supercat 1000 Class, finishing a tight 150 points ahead of Gold Coast team, Team 3 with Global coming in 3rd.
It was again a Mackay team who won the Supercat 600HP Class with BBC Digital finishing ahead of Victorian team Saracen and SUV Dodge Ram bringing home 3rd.
North Queensland delivered another winner in the Supercat 400HP Class with Townsville team It’s About Time bringing home the win. FGI came in 2nd for the Series and Hog’s Breath took 3rd.
The 2011 Australian Offshore Superboat Championships was a fantastic year with some fantastic racing.
We’ll all be back in 2012 with a bigger and better show.
